What is it like to work as a FedEx ground driver?

First, you need to understand that there are now 7 Fedex brand driving companies (plus the corporate overlord brand and the copy/ship company)

FedEx Express the original company

FedEx Ground

FedEx Home (the straight-to-video movie)

FedEx Custom Critical

Plus the tractor-trailer companies like Heavyweight, LTL, and Freight….

Now I know how some of these work… But are you asking for a ‘day in the life’ or ‘what are the benefits of each’?

Express – Hourly employees, full benefits, good retirement plan – works Mon-Fri (and some do Saturdays).

Ground – paid by the piece (pick up and delivery) if you own the route, where can I drop off a FedEx package, hourly if subcontracting (usually), benefits vary since you are either self-employed as a route owner or a hired hand working hourly. Retirement is whatever you manage to save. Works Mon-Fri from sun-up until the last package is delivered and picked up…

Home – A subdivision of Ground that specializes in residential deliveries, works thu-sat from about noon till 8 or so, smaller package size and weight limits than Ground or Express. Also, contractors who buy routes and maintain their trucks like Ground does, and is paid by the stop instead of by the piece if I recall correctly…

If you want a ‘day in the life’ we can tell you about Express.

Express drivers (full-time) come in and many load trucks in the morning, usually 1 person starts a little earlier and loads three trucks (his/her own and the truck to either side in the lineup). These neighboring drivers come in a little later (about halfway through the morning sort) and organize their trucks by stop order (the loader is usually doing this to his own truck as they go).

Once the sort is over the drivers balance the loads (people with too many stops transfer some to their neighboring routes that are lighter) and everyone heads out. Priority stops are delivered, then standard overnights and 2 or 3-day stops are done in whatever order is most efficient.

After that the driver makes any pick-ups in his/her area and heads back in, someone else unloads the trucks so they go home upon returning and processing their paperwork.

Some drivers work from 7 am–3 pm, others from 9 am–5 pm, and some in more remote areas work from 8 am–7 pm (4 days a week).

There are also some part-time drivers who come in and unload the packages in the morning from the shipping containers and then go out to deliver priority stops only, they work from 7 am to 11 am. Other part-timers work from around 3 pm to 8 pm on pick-up routes in busy areas.

These drivers often unload the freight off the full-timer’s trucks and do things like sort and scan the letters and paks, inspect the hazmat or international packages or even load the shipping containers.

what is the FedEx driver salary for owning a FedEx route?

FedEx does (or at least did) have to contract FedEx drivers. In one case a driver had held contracts in Texas before moving to Alabama. He owned his truck which was identical in every way to any other FedEx truck except he was responsible for its maintenance and upkeep.

He didn’t own his route but rather he held it as part of his contract with FedEx. He could, when renegotiating his contract request a different route, or FedEx could ask him to take a different route.
